About Yewfield
Set in a quiet elevated position with panoramic views over the Vale of Esthwaite, Lake Windermere and the Fells beyond, Yewfield is situated in over 80 acres of its own grounds. The house itself, with its impressive Gothic architecture dates back to 1859.
The extensive grounds around the house include native woodland, rough fell pasture, a small tarn and a stream. The grazed pasture is carefully managed giving priority to ecological considerations, which qualifies it to be part of the Environmentally Sensitive Areas Scheme.
Newly developed ornamental areas closer to the house include organic vegetable gardens, orchards, a herb patio and a mixed border. We are also experimenting with naturalistic styles and plantings such as a coppice garden, wildflower meadows, a fern corner and a wildlife pond.
A nature trail through the land and gardens guides the visitor through the grounds.

Yewfield has always tried to play its part through conservation. Gary Primrose who manages the woodland around Yewfield features in a Cumbria Woodlands case study on managing the plantation and explains the long term goal of setting up a wood fuel cycle for the house, providing chip and firewood, while converting the woodland from coniferous forest to deciduous woodland.

Yewfield acquires new woodlands

Yewfield has recently been able to acquire in the region of 80 acres of land behind the main house, extending the grounds which already include a nature trail and tarn.
Yewfield occasionally runs special workshops, (such as our Wild Flower study weekend), so this additional woodland will provide further opportuinties for our guests to enjoy the stunning natural surroundings.
Yewfield has installed a wood chip boiler!

Yewfield has recently installed a Hertz wood chip boiler with the support from a Bio-Energy capitol grant, which supplies the heating of the guest house and apartments.
